Foot Fetishism According to Brame, Brame & Jocobs (1996) the definition of foot fetishism is a pronounced sexual interest in the lower limb or anything that covers portions of them. The allure normally attributed to erogenous zones is literally translocated downward and the fetishist response to the foot is the same as a conventional person's arousal at seeing genitals. Freud considered foot binding as a form of fetishism. Moderate to high level fetishism would be classified as a type of paraphilia. Pedal Paraphilia In the case of pedal paraphilia, the concentration is on the foot, stockings or shoe. Ellis (1936), a twentieth century, English essayist, physician and pioneer sexologist was of the opinion the foot (or shoe) was not a mere instrument, but a true symbol and focus of worship to the fetishist. In the true sense of a fetish, the foot (or shoe) became an idealised object which the fetishist was content to contemplate or reverently touch. Ellis & Arabanel (1961) acknowledged the most frequent form of erotic symbolism was that which idealised the foot and shoe. People can also have a sock or hose fetishism. Many are males but there are some noted case studies of females with hose fixation. The habit is often associated with an auto-erotic asphyxia fixation which is sexually driven. Like feet and shoes, hose fetishists require some specific attraction in the object which may include special colours, shape or smell. People with sock fixation will have no special attraction to feet or shoes. Fetishism as a Deviant Behavior Whenever the word “fetish” is brought up in everyday conversion, the first word that pops into a person’s head is usually “feet.” The two words have become almost synonymous. But in reality, there is much more to fetishism than feet. And with the advent of the Internet, more and more fetishes have started to come to light. Millions of Web sites are popping up that cater to specific fetishes – from the classic foot fetish to diapers and balloons to kidnapping. But more importantly, people with these fetishes are joining interest groups and realizing, once and for all, that they are not alone in their feelings and sexual desires. Fetishism is one segment of a group of deviant sexual behaviors known as paraphilias, which are, by definition “a dependence on unusual, narrowly focused, or forbidden stimuli – to the exclusion of all others – to achieve arousal” (Segell). Fetishism is a paraphilia in which “arousal in response to sexual objects or situations that are not part of normal arousal-activity patterns and that in varying degrees may interfere with the capacity for reciprocal, affectionate sexual activity” (qtd. in Weinberg). When a person has a fetish, he or she is aroused by various objects or situations, such as feet or balloons or the act of being dominated by another person. According to W.P. de Silva, “fetishism involves recurrent sexual urges or behaviors concerning the use of inanimate objects such as leather and rubber garments, women’s underwear, stockings, and shoes and boots.” However, “fetish” hasn’t always been used to refer to sexual matters. The term “fetish” originated from the West African pidgin term “fetisso,” which was actually derived from the Portuguese word “feitico,” a reference to West African amulets and “power objects” (Ellis). “Feitico” is actually a derivative of the Latin root facere, meaning “to make” and usually used in reference to manmade goods (Ellis). The word began to be tied to sexual matters with the advent of Sigmund Freud and his followers, who felt that fetishism “stemmed from the refusal to give up to the infantile belief that both parents possessed a phallus” (Ellis). The first person to take a serious scholarly look at sexual fetishism was French psychologist Alfred Binet (Freund 687). He observed it to be “an unusually strong erotic interest in certain physical characteristics of potential sex partners” (Freund 687). Binet’s observations were then confirmed by Krafft-Ebing, a 19th century sexologist and expert on paraphilias, who published a book in 1887 entitled Psychopathia Sexualis, which dealt with fetishism among many other sexual forms of deviance, including necrophilia, exhibitionism, pedophilia, bondage, bestiality and incest (de Silva 654). Krafft-Ebing also noted that there were two different levels of fetishism – “nearly normal” and “clearly pathologic” (Freund 687). In pathological fetishism, the individual “most often asks a sexual partner to wear the object, or will become aroused whilst holding, feeling, touching or smelling the object” and has more than likely had these feelings and urges since adolescence (Twohig 267). The pathologic mode of fetishism is also covered in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV, which gives three major criteria for diagnosing an individual as a fetishist (Twohig 267). The first is that there are “recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges or behaviors including the use of nonliving objects” for at least a six-month period (qtd. in Twohig 267). Second, the “fantasies, sexual urges or behaviors cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning” (qtd. in Twohig 267). Thirdly, fetishism “is not limited to cross-dressing or articles of female clothing, but may include a wide variety of objects” (Twohig 267). However, many people are reluctant to accept fetishism as a disease, claiming that they “don’t believe it hurts anybody” (qtd. in “Knocking”). Regardless of whether or not fetishism is widely accepted as a disease, its separation from the norm still classifies it as a deviant behavior, because requiring an object for sexual fulfillment is not part of the norm in American society. The fetish object, however, does not necessarily have to be an inanimate object, as is the case with foot fetishists or breast fetishists. Surprisingly, the most common fetish object is not feet, but rather women’s underwear (Twohig 267). Other common fetish objects include shoes, boots, stockings, leather and rubber garments (de Silva 654). However, the scope of fetishism is extremely broad, with more unusual objects running the gamut from diapers and baby clothes to wheelchairs, leg braces and amputees, and even those whose greatest sexual fantasy is to be kidnapped, thrown in the trunk of a car, then taken to an undisclosed location for a sexual “favor.” Despite the wide range of objects fetishists fantasize about, feet are still the foremost fetish in the American consciousness. Both homosexuals and heterosexuals are often attracted to the feet, shoes, socks and stockings of both men and women, depending on the sex he or she is attracted to. Some use the feet of their partner to achieve arousal, while others prefer to masturbate while viewing a photograph, shoe, or other foot-related object they find to be sexually stimulating (Weinberg). In fact, 83 percent of the respondents in Weinberg’s 1994 study of homosexual men with foot fetishes admitted that they masturbate at least once a week while fantasizing about footwear (Weinberg). More than a third of the respondents subscribed to footwear magazines, while more than half collected advertisements for various footwear and 92 percent looked at pornography involving feet or footwear (Weinberg). Some heterosexual men with foot fetishes will even go far enough as to brave the embarrassment of purchasing women’s shoes in a department store to fulfill their fantasies (Segell). There are even organizations for foot fetishists, both homosexual and heterosexual (Segell). The Foot Fetishists and Fantasies Society, or FFF, is an organization for heterosexual foot fetishists, while the Foot Fraternity exists for homosexuals (Segell). Both organizations send out quarterly rosters to their members (Segell). The Foot Fraternity’s rosters contain: articles relating to feet and shoes; order forms for photographs, video tapes, and books of a pornographic nature that focus on feet; and “advertisements” submitted by the members of the group which state their fetish preferences, the city and state in which they live, and a code number for contacting them through the Foot Fraternity (Weinberg). Current membership in the Foot Fraternity includes approximately 4,000 men, mostly living in the United States, 88 percent of whom are homosexual, with the other 12 percent classifying themselves as bisexual (Weinberg). About half of the members actively place ads in the quarterly roster (Weinberg). Interestingly, when Weinberg asked the members of the Foot Fraternity why they found feet and footwear to be sexually arousing, 20 percent had no idea why they were so attracted to anything foot-related. However, most foot fetishists tie their attraction to at least one of the senses: hearing, taste, touch, smell, or simply sight (Weinberg). “In interviews, many subjects said they were especially aroused by footwear that had been worn by a good-looking person” (Weinberg). By this token, many foot fetishists will buy their fetish objects in thrift stores or used shoe stores, content to merely imagine what the shoes’ previous owner may have looked like (Weinberg). “Thus, for many, it is not only the object itself that is sexually arousing, but even more the object’s connection with a living person” (Weinberg). Some respondents, however, were able to trace the roots of their fetishism back to an event or events that took place in their childhoods (Weinberg). For example, one common potential source was the memory of having one’s feet tickled as a child or adolescent (Weinberg). According to Fred Berlin, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins and head of the National Institute for the Study, Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Trauma in Baltimore, foot fetishism is a “compulsive” fetish (qtd. in Weinberg). In other words, foot fetishists are usually so narrowly focused on their fetish that they often cannot otherwise achieve sexual stimulation (qtd. in Weinberg). “Usually, it goes back to childhood and something comforting involving feet,” Berlin says of the origins of the foot fetish in various individuals (qtd. in Weinberg). However, foot fetishists are not the only ones who can trace the origins of their fetish back to their childhood – in fact, many people who admit to having a fetish can give a general age at which they first started feeling attracted to that particular object or body part, and it’s often quite a young age. One amputee fetishist “recalls intense sexual arousal during puberty when he was looking through his physician father’s textbooks and found pictures of women with amputated limbs” (Wise 340). “The patient reported when he was 13, he experienced a dream about cutting off his penis …” (Wise 340). And later, in a prime example of when fetishism goes “too far,” he fulfilled that fantasy when he severed his penis with a sterilized razor blade (Wise 339). Such behaviors as the one mentioned above certainly put the innocuousness of fetishism in serious question, as does the speculation that fetishism can have a serious impact on intimacy. In effect, the fetish can even “replace the human partner to various degrees so that the fetish object stands for or signifies a particular partner or class of partners” (Weinberg). According to some researchers, “true fetishism is a sexual obsession with an object or body part rather than interest in a partner” (qtd. in Weinberg). Most people even picture the “typical fetishist” to be an “individual who turns to fetishism because of problems in securing sexual partners” (Weinberg). According to Segell, “obsession with a fetish object distances – perhaps defends – a man from real involvement with a partner.” However, some fetishists choose to involve their partners in their fetish practices. Such practices are common in sadomasochistic play, or the use of physical pain to achieve orgasm, bondage and discipline play, humiliation play, and dominance and submission play (Weinberg). In his study of Foot Fraternity members, Weinberg found that about 60 percent of those surveyed considered foot and footwear activities to be an important part of their sex lives with their steady partners. By that token, it could be suggested that fetishists do not necessarily reject intimate relationships, but instead, “excessive introversion causes fetishism and that having a fetish perpetuates social withdrawal because trying to attract sexual partners becomes unnecessary” (Weinberg). Sharing one’s fetish with another person, no matter how intimate the relationship, can also be a frightening experience because of social stigmatization of fetishistic behaviors. However, the Internet has allowed a fetish subculture of sorts to develop, aided by the veil of anonymity offered by that particular medium of communication.
